What is Access Control?

Access control is the practice of regulating who can enter, exit, or interact with secured areas or systems. In physical security, it refers to the use of technology—such as keypads, card readers, or biometric devices—to allow or deny entry to a building, room, or zone based on predefined rules.

Modern, Managed Security

Unlike traditional keys and locks, access control systems are programmable, auditable, and centrally managed. Credentials can be issued, revoked, or adjusted in real time, and every event—authorized or denied—is logged for review.

Core Components of an Access Control System:

  • Credentials – Cards, fobs, PINs, mobile apps, or biometrics
  • Readers – Devices that validate and communicate credentials to the system
  • Controllers – The logic processors that make access decisions and trigger door mechanisms
  • Software – The interface for managing users, doors, schedules, and reports
  • Audit Logs – A digital record of access attempts, events, and alerts
